Biography

Mary Eileen Dolan is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on improving the quality of life for cancer patients by identifying genetic variants associated with the risk of severe and persistent toxicities from chemotherapy, such as peripheral neuropathy, ototoxicity, and tinnitus. She is particularly interested in the long-term adverse effects of these treatments in children and young adults. Dolan's laboratory conducts clinical genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to determine the shared genetic architecture of idiopathic forms of traits and to elucidate the biochemical and cellular impacts of identified genes. Her work integrates large datasets of genetic variation, gene expression, and pharmacologic traits to identify factors contributing to chemotherapeutic-induced toxicity. With a focus on machine learning, her lab is building predictive models to identify patients at the greatest risk for severe toxicities.
