Biography

Mary Harrod is a Professor of French Studies at the University of Warwick, where she specializes in transnational Euro-American screen studies. Her primary research focuses on contemporary film and media history and theory, with a strong emphasis on cultural and gender identities and their relationship to aesthetics in popular and transnational modes. Harrod completed her BA in Modern Languages and spent six years in film development and production before writing her PhD thesis on the notable rise of romantic comedy in France from a cultural studies perspective. This work culminated in a monograph that was shortlisted for the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies Best Monograph Prize. She has also co-edited a book examining the status of European cinema in an increasingly globalized context, which won the BAFTSS Edited Collection Prize in 2019. Harrod's commitment to discussions of gender representation in film led her to serve as a member of the research consortium FEMME, which consists of 15 scholars from various institutions focusing on female filmmakers and feminism in media. Her scholarly works include the monograph 'Heightened Genre: Women's Filmmaking in Hollywood' and numerous co-edited volumes that address diverse aspects of genre and representation in contemporary cinema. Moreover, she has held visiting lectureships at several universities and contributes regularly to various media outlets. Harrod teaches a range of courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, where she highlights the intersection of film, gender studies, and cultural representation.
