Mary Jo Kirisits is a professor in the Environmental Water Resources Engineering program at the University of Texas at Austin. She completed her B.S. in civil engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo, followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in environmental engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After concluding a postdoctoral appointment in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northwestern University, she joined the faculty at UT. Her research interests primarily include drinking water biofiltration, the study of opportunistic human pathogens, the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on wastewater, and the interactions of nanomaterials with antimicrobial resistant bacteria. Currently, she is leading a multi-institution project funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency focused on opportunistic pathogens and disinfection by-products in drinking water distribution systems.
