Dr. Mary Liston

Biography

Mary Liston is an Associate Professor at the Peter Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia. Her teaching focuses on public law, particularly administrative and constitutional law, as well as legal theory and law literature. Her research broadly examines public law and delves into various aspects of administrative law. A significant part of her work lies at the intersection of constitutional law, legal theory, and democratic theory, where she explores the evolution of the concept of the rule of law and its foundational role within Canadian public law. She has contributed to leading casebooks, including co-authoring 'Public Law: Cases, Commentary and Analysis' and has been a key contributor to 'Administrative Law in Context'. Professor Liston has actively engaged with the Supreme Court of Canada regarding crucial public law cases, focusing on the complexities surrounding good governance and the rule of law. Throughout her academic career, she has also developed expertise in emerging fields such as Aboriginal administrative law, engaging in comparative analysis across various jurisdictions including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Currently, she is working on projects that investigate the role of apologies within Canadian public law.
