Biography

Mary G. McDonald is a Professor and the Homer C. Rice Chair in Sports Society at the School of History and Sociology within the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. McDonald has published over 60 refereed articles and book chapters, co-editing significant works such as 'Reading Sport: Critical Essays on Power and Representation' and 'Sociocultural Examinations of Sports Concussions'. Her research primarily focuses on American culture and sport, particularly inequality issues related to gender, race, class, and sexuality. She has served in leadership roles, including past president of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport. Dr. McDonald has been recognized for her contributions, receiving awards such as the Service Excellence Award from the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport and the 2025 Class of 1934 Outstanding Service Award from Georgia Tech. As an ADVANCE Professor, she collaborates with other faculty to support campus advising and leadership structures within the institute.
