Biography

Mary Pavelka is a biological anthropologist whose research focuses on evolution, menopause, and the social dynamics of nonhuman primates. She earned her M.A. in Anthropology from McMaster University in 1983, followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta in 1988. Since joining the University of Calgary in 1989, she has conducted significant research on arboreal folivorous, non-female bonded black howler monkeys in Monkey River, Belize. Her scholarly work has consistently garnered student acclaim and led to several awards, including the Faculty of Social Science Distinguished Teacher Award in 2005. Dr. Pavelka has also served as Head of the Department of Anthropology from 2008 to 2014. Her recent studies have investigated the fission-fusion dynamics of black-handed spider monkeys in Belize, contributing important insights into primate behaviour and ecology. Through her teaching and research, she actively participates in university strategic initiatives and promotes excellence in education.
