Dr. Mary Shaw

Biography

Mary Shaw is a Professor in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, widely recognized for her fundamental contributions to the fields of software engineering and software architecture. She earned her PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon and her BA in Mathematics from Rice University. Shaw's research focuses on the design of software systems, particularly software architecture, and she has made significant contributions to programming languages, specifications, and reliable software development methodologies. She co-authored the influential textbook 'Software Architecture: Perspectives on an Emerging Discipline' and created pioneering courses in data structures and software architecture. Over the years, her research interests have evolved to include self-adaptive systems and the integration of control theory in software engineering. A recipient of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, Shaw has also received various awards for her contributions to the field, including the IEEE TCSE Lifetime Achievement Award and the ACM SIGSOFT Outstanding Research Award. She is a Fellow of the ACM and IEEE and has been actively involved in shaping research practices in software engineering.
