Biography

Mary C Sullivan is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Brown University. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on the biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors that understand the developmental trajectories of preterm infants. She leads the longest-running NIH follow-up study of premature infants into adulthood in the United States. This longitudinal approach enables her to prospectively test and determine the impacts of prematurity on early disease onset within the context of lifetime medical and environmental risks. The data from her research provide a strong body of evidence for clinical strategies that invoke nurse-parent partnerships and restructure specific components of the environmental context to promote optimal infant development. Dr. Sullivan brings a fresh perspective to preterm development, addressing a significant national and international issue.
