Dr. Mary Velasquez

Biography

Mary Velasquez is a Professor at the University of Texas at Austin's School of Social Work, where she serves as the director of the Health Behavior Research Training Institute. With over 20 years of experience, she has contributed significantly to behavioral interventions and has received substantial support from the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Her research focuses on integrated primary care, screening brief interventions, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, alcohol and drug abuse, prenatal health, HIV prevention, and smoking cessation. Velasquez holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and a Master’s degree from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Her work is known for utilizing evidence-based interventions and motivational interviewing to enhance integrated behavioral health services.
