Biography

Mary Wells is the Dean of Engineering at the University of Waterloo, having taken on the role on July 1, 2020. Previously, she served as the Dean of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Guelph from 2017 to 2020. Before her deanship at Guelph, Wells was a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo for a decade. Her career began as a professor in materials engineering at the University of British Columbia from 1996 to 2007, after which she gained experience in the steel industry both in Canada and internationally. She has received numerous awards for her contributions to the field, including the Engineers Canada Award for Support of Women in Engineering in 2017 and being named a Fellow of Engineers Canada in 2018. Wells’ research focus includes the relationship between processing, structure, and properties of advanced metallic alloys, particularly as they relate to the transportation sector. Her interests expand into areas such as process modeling, hot deformation of metallic materials, casting of light metals, and the mechanics of microstructure/processing models. Additionally, she has chaired various initiatives aimed at promoting women in engineering and has authored significant publications in her field.
