Maryam Shanechi is the Alexander A. Sawchuk Chair and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at USC. She also holds joint appointments in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Computer Science. Dr. Shanechi is a member of the Neuroscience Graduate Program and the founding director of the new USC Center for Neurotechnology. She served as an Assistant Professor at Cornell University's ECE department before joining USC in July 2014. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Science from the University of Toronto in 2004 and her Master’s and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2006 and 2011, respectively. Dr. Shanechi has held postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard Medical School and the University of California, Berkeley. Her research interests focus on the interface of artificial intelligence and clinical neuroscience, where she develops algorithmic solutions for significant clinical problems, including brain-computer interfaces for restoring motor function and treating neuropsychiatric disorders. She has received numerous awards for her pioneering work, including the NIH Director's New Innovator Award, MIT Technology Review's Top 35 Innovators recognition, and recently earned the title of 2024 IEEE Fellow.
