Biography

Maryellen L. Giger is the A.N. Pritzker Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Chicago, where she holds the vice-chair position for Basic Science Research. She has over 30 years of experience in research, focusing on topics such as computer-aided diagnosis, machine learning, deep learning, and radiomics, particularly in relation to breast and lung cancers among other conditions. Giger has significantly contributed to the field, serving on various NIH and DOD funding agency study sections and as a member of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering Advisory Council. As a leader, she has held prestigious roles including president of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and SPIE. Her work includes more than 280 peer-reviewed publications and over 30 patents, alongside mentoring numerous graduate and medical students. Recognized for her impactful contributions, she has received numerous awards including the William D. Coolidge Gold Medal from the AAPM and was named among the 50 medical physicists who have influenced the field over the past 50 years. She co-founded Quantitative Insights, which produced the FDA-cleared diagnostic tool QuantX, recognized as one of TIME magazine's top inventions in 2019. Giger continues to advance the use of artificial intelligence in medical imaging through a variety of initiatives, including leading multiple funded projects aimed at improving health outcomes through technology.
