Dr. Maryse Kruithof

Biography

Maryse Kruithof graduated with a doctoral thesis titled 'Shouting Desert,' which explores the encounters between Dutch missionaries and Javanese Islam from 1850 to 1910. Her work primarily focuses on the history of Dutch missionary interactions with local communities in Java, contributing significantly to the understanding of Christian-Muslim relations in a colonial context. Kruithof's research has involved detailed examinations of the strategies and reflections of six missionaries, both Protestant and Catholic, thereby creating a substantial base for her study. Since 2014, she has held teaching positions, initially as a lecturer at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Utrecht University. In 2015, she became affiliated with Erasmus University College as a lecturer in the Department of Humanities, where she has taught and coordinated courses across history, religious studies, and academic skills. Additionally, she has been involved in a research project at Free University of Amsterdam investigating the causal relationships between 19th and early 20th-century Christian missionary endeavors and the emergent secularization in regions like Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
