Dr. Maryse Kruithof

Biography

Maryse Kruithof earned her doctoral degree from Erasmus University Rotterdam in December 2014, with a thesis titled "Shouting Desert," exploring Dutch missionary encounters with Javanese Islam between 1850 and 1910. Her research contributes to the understanding of Christian-Muslim relations within a colonial context by examining the micro-level interactions and strategies of six Dutch missionaries. Since 2014, she has held significant positions in academia, including a lecturer role in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Utrecht University, before joining Erasmus University College in 2015. At Erasmus University, she coordinates courses in history, religious studies, and academic skills, as well as engaging in research projects. One notable project she is involved in examines the causal relationships between 19th and early 20th-century Christian missionary efforts and the emergence of secularization in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In addition to her teaching, she is also active in peer-reviewing publications and has presented her work at academic conferences.
