Biography

Masad J. Damha is a Distinguished James McGill Professor in the Department of Chemistry at McGill University. He received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. from McGill University in 1983 and 1988, respectively. His research focuses on chemical synthesis and biochemical properties of nucleosides and nucleic acids, aiming to deepen the understanding of intracellular communication involving these molecules and proteins, particularly in relation to CRISPR/Cas9 technology. He has pioneered various projects centered on biotechnology applications such as siRNA, antisense oligonucleotides, and aptamers. Throughout his career, Masad has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the R.U. Lemieux Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. He serves as President of the International Society for Nucleosides, Nucleotides & Nucleic Acids and was the past president of the Oligonucleotide Therapeutics Society. In addition to his research contributions, he is also dedicated to teaching, offering courses such as Introductory Organic Chemistry and Advanced Nucleic Acid Chemistry.
