Biography

Masahiro Ono is an expert immunologist focusing on T-cell regulation. His research addresses the mechanisms of T cell activation and regulation in the context of autoimmunity, infections, and cancer. He is a pioneer of the Timer of Cell Kinetics and Activity (Tocky), which analyzes temporal changes in T-cell activities in vivo utilizing Fluorescent Timer proteins. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Medicine at Kyoto University from 1993 to 1999 and trained in dermatology. Dr. Ono pursued his PhD from 2002 to 2006, studying regulatory T cells (Tregs) and the transcription factors Foxp3 and Runx1, marking the start of his career in immunology. He received a Human Frontier Science Program Fellowship in 2009 and joined University College London (UCL) to extend his research into immunological genomics. In 2012, he was awarded the BBSRC David Phillips Fellowship, allowing him to establish his lab at UCL. He joined Imperial College London in 2015, where he was appointed Senior Lecturer in February 2018 and promoted to Reader in Immunology in 2020.
