Biography

Masato Kikuchi is an Associate Professor of Japanese at the School of Modern Languages. He earned his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, with a focus on the application of natural language processing techniques, including the development and evaluation of intelligent computer-assisted language instruction (CALI), discourse/pragmatics processing, and psycholinguistics. His current research and development work involve creating a virtual world-based learning platform, 'Life', which includes advanced content-based Japanese courses and the translation of technical business documents. Kikuchi is particularly interested in building a multiplayer platform that provides visualized feedback for language production. One of his current projects involves testing the effectiveness of 3D visualization techniques in language learning through experiments planned for Spring 2023, comparing learning outcomes between immersive 3D-based games and conventional 2D-based games. He also focuses on grammar visualization techniques using subjective versus objective construal in teaching Japanese.
