Dr. Masha Salazkina

Biography

Masha Salazkina's work incorporates transnational approaches to film theory and cultural history focusing on the historical relationship between Socialist bloc countries and Asia, Africa, and Latin America. She has published essays in prominent journals including Cinema Journal, Film History, and Screen. Her research interests include geopolitics of film, media theory, and production, along with theorizations of World Cinema and film education. Salazkina's book, Excess: Sergei Eisenstein's Mexico (University of Chicago Press, 2009), discusses Eisenstein's unfinished Mexican project in the context of post-revolutionary Mexico and global cultures. Her recent publication, World Socialist Cinema (University of California Press, 2023), investigates socialist Cold War film cultures. Salazkina also focuses on transnational comparative analysis in her forthcoming work, Romancing Yesenia, which examines the cultural industries of 1970s Mexico and the Soviet Union. In addition to her research, she contributes to open-access resources for non-professional filmmaking and is involved in various scholarly groups. Salazkina holds a PhD from Yale University and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on film and media at Concordia University.
