Biography

Masi Asare is an Associate Professor and Director of the American Music Theatre Project at Northwestern University. She is a scholar, songwriter, dramatist, and voice teacher, who teaches theory and craft in critical musical theatre studies, vocal performance studies, and musical theatre writing. Asare's work includes a variety of acclaimed productions, such as 'Paradise Square' on Broadway and 'Monsoon Wedding' Off-Broadway. Her upcoming scholarly book, 'Blues Mamas Broadway Belters,' is set to be published by Duke University Press in fall 2024. Asare has also co-edited a special issue of 'Studies in Musical Theatre' titled 'The Musical-Theatrical Global South.'
