Biography

Matei Ciocarlie's primary research interest lies in achieving reliable robotic performance in unstructured human environments. His work focuses on novel robotic hand designs and control, autonomous Human-in-the-Loop mobile manipulation, shared autonomy, teleoperation, and assistive robotics. He is particularly interested in novel hand designs that integrate mechanical and computational intelligence, utilizing tactile and proprioceptive sensing in innovative ways. Professor Ciocarlie completed his Ph.D. at Columbia University in New York, where his doctoral dissertation focused on reducing the computational complexity associated with dexterous robotic grasping. His excellence in research has been recognized with several awards, including the 2010 Robotdalen Scientific Award and the 2013 IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Early Career Award. Before joining the Mechanical Engineering faculty at Columbia, he served as a Research Scientist and Group Manager at Willow Garage, Inc. and as a Senior Research Scientist at Google, Inc.
