Biography

Matěj Peč joined the faculty at the MIT Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) in 2017. He holds a bachelor's degree in geology (2006) and a master's degree in structural geology (2008) from Charles University in the Czech Republic. He also earned a master's degree as an ERASMUS scholar from Université Montpellier II in France (2007). Peč completed his Ph.D. in rock mechanics at Universität Basel in Switzerland in 2012. During his doctoral studies, he spent time as a visiting scientist at the University of Tromsø and pursued a postdoctoral research position in the laboratory of Prof. David L. Kohlstedt at the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on experimental rock deformation, studying microscale structures to understand the processes of plate tectonics. Peč conducts high-pressure and high-temperature experiments in the laboratory to explore fundamental forces within plate tectonics, examining phenomena such as melting Earth's mantle and the failure of rocks under specific conditions. He also investigates methods for mitigating climate change through carbon mineralization and storage.
