Biography

Mathew Horrocks is a Professor of Biophysics at the University of Edinburgh, leading the Edinburgh Single-Molecule Biophysics Group in the School of Chemistry. He completed his undergraduate studies in Chemistry at Oriel College, University of Oxford, followed by a Master's project on single-molecule techniques under the supervision of Professor Mark Wallace. He conducted research at the University of Cambridge, developing microscopy techniques to study protein aggregates related to neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. After a brief research period in New South Wales, Australia, Mathew returned to Cambridge in 2016 for a Junior Research Fellowship at Christ's College and later received the Herchel Smith Fellowship. He moved to the University of Edinburgh in 2018 to establish the ESMB Group, becoming a Senior Lecturer in 2022 and was promoted to Professor in 2024. Mathew is passionate about applying advanced imaging techniques in biology and enjoys competing in triathlons in his free time.
