Biography

Mathias Drton works on methods theory in the field of statistics. His principal research interest is the analysis of complex multivariate data. He focuses on graphical models that capture fine causal relationships, finding manifold applications in modern data-driven science. His research aims to clarify how algebraic probability theory can inform conclusions about causal relationships from available data, as well as to develop efficient estimation methods. Dr. Drton received his doctorate in statistics in 2004 from the University of Washington, Seattle, and subsequently worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. He held positions as an Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor at the University of Chicago from 2005 to 2012. In 2012, he became a Professor of Statistics at the University of Washington and spent the year 2018/19 at the University of Copenhagen before joining the Technical University of Munich in 2019 as Professor of Mathematical Statistics.
