Biography

Mathias Poertner is an Associate Professor in Political Science at the London School of Economics. His research lies at the intersection of political behavior, democratic representation, political parties and movements, and political methodology, with a regional focus on Latin America and Europe. Poertner employs a variety of methods including field, survey, and natural experiments, as well as intensive qualitative techniques, to study how political participation and representation are shaped by social identities, partisanship, ethnicity, and gender. His research also examines the identification with new parties and electoral support shaped by emergent civil society organizations, exploring the role of social identities in the context of immigrant integration. He has authored award-winning books like "Creating Partisans: Organizational Roots of New Parties in Latin America" and "Native Bias: Overcoming Discrimination Against Immigrants". His work has been published in leading journals and recognized with several awards including the Gregory Luebbert Prize, the Leon Epstein Outstanding Book Award, and the APSA Experimental Research section Book Award. Before joining LSE, he held a faculty position at Texas A&M University and received a postdoctoral fellowship with the Evidence Governance Politics network.
