Biography

Mathias Risse is the Berthold Beitz Professor of Human Rights, Global Affairs and Philosophy at Harvard University and the Director of the Carr-Ryan Center for Human Rights. His research primarily focuses on political philosophy and philosophy of technology, addressing questions of global justice, including human rights, inequality, taxation, trade, immigration, climate change, and obligations to future generations. Risse has conducted extensive studies in 19th century German philosophy, particularly Nietzsche, and authored six books, including 'Global Justice' (2012) and 'Political Theory in the Digital Age: Artificial Intelligence Takes HKS' (2023). He teaches across various programs at Harvard, including Harvard College and the Harvard Extension School. Risse is also associated with several academic initiatives and international conferences, promoting collaboration among political philosophers across cultural divides. Before joining Harvard in 2002, he taught at Yale University and earned his PhD from Princeton University in 2000. He grew up in a village in Westphalia, Germany, and has studied at renowned institutions including Bielefeld, Pittsburgh, and Jerusalem.
