Biography

Mathias Unberath is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University, with secondary appointments in Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery. He is a core faculty member of the Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics (LCSR) and an affiliate faculty member at the Institute for Assured Autonomy. His research focuses on computer-assisted medicine, computer vision, artificial intelligence, machine learning, mixed reality, and medical robotics, where he strives to enhance human-centered solutions using emerging technologies. Dr. Unberath has published over 150 articles in journals and conferences, earning numerous awards including the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering Trailblazer R21 Award and the NSF CAREER Award. He received his bachelor's degree in Physics and master's in Optical Technologies from Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), where he also completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science, graduating summa cum laude in 2017. Before joining academia, he held positions as an assistant research professor and postdoctoral fellow at LCSR. He is also a member of the Data Science AI Institute and leads the Advanced Robotics Computationally Augmented Environments (ARCADE) Lab.
