Biography

Mathieu Lemaire completed his medical training at McGill University in 2004 and subsequently moved to Toronto to study Pediatrics at the Hospital for Sick Children, where he completed his fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology. He then pursued a PhD in Investigative Medicine at Yale University under the guidance of Dr. Richard P. Lifton, focusing on the genetics of rare pediatric kidney diseases. Dr. Lemaire returned to the University of Toronto in 2014 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and joined the Division of Nephrology at the Hospital for Sick Children as a Staff Physician. He is also cross-appointed in the Department of Biochemistry and the Institute of Medical Sciences. His research primarily investigates the pathophysiology of atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome caused by diacylglycerol kinase epsilon (DGKE) deficiency, utilizing genomic tools for gene discovery and functional dissection of candidate genes through advanced microscopic, cell biology, and biochemical methods. Dr. Lemaire's laboratory aims to contribute to the understanding of disease pathophysiology and to translate these findings into tangible changes in clinical care. His work has been pivotal in identifying non-complement gene causes of recessive aHUS and continues to explore the mechanisms by which DGKE deficiency leads to thrombosis in small blood vessels of the kidneys. Furthermore, his team is engaged in gene discovery across various rare pediatric kidney diseases through whole-exome sequencing. He also teaches courses in Biochemistry and Translational Medicine.
