Mathijs van de Sande conducts research on democratic legitimacy and the role of protest in social movements. His work draws on philosophical traditions including anarchism, feminism, Marxism, and Post-Marxism. At Radboud University Nijmegen, he teaches political and practical philosophy. His book, 'Prefigurative Democracy: Protest, Social Movements, Political Institution Society' (2023), examines contemporary protest movements and their organizational structures. In 2021, van de Sande began a research project funded by the Gerda Henkel Stiftung, titled 'Vive la Commune: Communalism and Democratic Repertoire', which investigates the political legacies of the Paris Commune of 1871. He actively participates in academic unions, including the FNV labor union.
