Matias Duran Matute is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Physics at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His research focuses on understanding and modeling environmental flows and the transport of material substances. His work encompasses various transport phenomena such as sediment and salt transport in coastal regions, marine debris, and droplets in indoor environments. The ultimate goal of his research is to improve predictions of these natural processes, enabling informed decision-making. Throughout his career, Matias has conducted high-resolution numerical simulations of the Dutch Wadden Sea, which have allowed him to understand and quantify transport fluxes in the region. His research has been supported by a NWO VENI grant, during which he investigated the efficiency of vortices in sediment transport media. He is also interested in developing mitigation measures for salt intrusion in rivers, mixing in stratified flows, self-organization, transport in coastal regions, and reducing airborne infections. Understanding these complex interactions is a critical step towards improving the environments we inhabit.
