Dr. Mats Thelander

Biography

Mats Thelander is a Professor of Modern Swedish at Uppsala University since 1987. His research primarily focuses on socio-dialectology, theories of variational linguistics, historical stylistics, corpus linguistics, and language planning. Thelander has published numerous monographs and scholarly articles included in national and international anthologies and periodicals. He has been an editor for several volumes in his field of interest and has led a comprehensive research project on Swedish drama dialogue from the early 18th century to modern times, collaborating with colleagues from the department. His cooperation with the English Department involves joint corpus studies of English and Swedish drama texts from the 18th to the 20th centuries, particularly in historical pragmatics. In addition to his research, Thelander has taught at the Department of Scandinavian Languages, supervising PhD students with a notable success rate. He served as head of the Department from 1990 to 1995, was a member of the quality group for the Faculty of Linguistics, and has held various leadership roles such as president of the teacher education board and the Swedish Language Council. Over the years, he has been part of several academic committees and received numerous honors for his contributions to linguistics and language policy in Sweden and beyond.
