Biography

Matt Bowers is an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his Ph.D. in Kinesiology from the University of Texas in 2011, and prior to that, he completed his B.S. and M.S. in Sport Management at the University of Florida. His research primarily explores management systems in athlete development and the influence of sport settings on performance and participation over a lifespan. Bowers focuses on reimagining the youth sport experience and has particular interests in the developmental roles of unstructured sports settings, such as sandlot and pickup games, and the impact of sports video games on youth development. He has contributed to the field through various research studies and has been involved with the Aspen Institute's Project Play, serving on advisory boards and committees related to youth sports. His work has been highlighted in major publications such as Sports Illustrated and the Wall Street Journal. He resides in Austin with his wife, Lauren, and their son, Samson.
