Professor Matt Kilburn obtained his BSc in Planetary Science from University College London and completed his PhD in Experimental Petrology at the University of Bristol. He held postdoctoral positions at the Max Planck Institute and the University of Bristol before joining the University of Oxford as a Research Fellow in 2003. In 2006, he joined the University of Western Australia (UWA) as a lecturer at the Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis (CMCA) and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2010, Associate Professor in 2013, and Professor in 2018. In 2016, he became the Deputy Director of CMCA and was promoted to Director in 2018. In August 2019, Professor Kilburn left UWA to take the position of Head of the Environmental Sample Laboratory at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, where he currently works and holds an Adjunct Professor position at the School of Earth Sciences at UWA. His research focuses on Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) analytical techniques applied in geochemistry and biomedical research, and he is currently engaged in nuclear safeguards, isotopic analyses, and stable isotope analysis.
