Biography

Matt Lampitt is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Bristol’s Department of English, working on the ERC–UKRI project, 'Mapping March: Medieval Wales England, c. 1282–1550' (MOWLIT). He contributes to database development involving places, people, manuscripts, and texts integrated with newly revised digital maps of Marcher lordships. Additionally, he collaborates with Luciana Cordo Russo on an edited volume titled 'The French Celtic Worlds', examining the dynamics of Francophone culture within premodern Celtic-speaking territories. His independent project, entitled 'Mudbound', explores themes of materiality in medieval literary culture, engaging with recent ecotheoretical writings. Lampitt's wider research interests encompass literary cultures of premodern Britain, France, and Occitania; medieval multilingualism; manuscript studies; digital environmental humanities; Arthurian literature; and critical theory. He studied French and German at Jesus College, Cambridge, earning an MA in French Literature and Culture, followed by a PhD in French at King’s College London, where he was supervised by Professors Simon Gaunt and Julia Crick. He also held a Junior Research Fellowship at St John’s College, Cambridge before joining the Mapping March project at the University of Bristol. Additionally, he serves as an Affiliated Lecturer in the French Section at the University of Cambridge.
