Biography

Matt Mowlem completed his M.Eng. in Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Southampton in 1996, followed by various roles within industry, including serving as Events Manager and President of the Students' Union, where he gained experience in industrial manufacturing, entrepreneurial roles, and composite materials in aeronautics. He obtained his Ph.D. in 2002 from the Optoelectronics Research Centre, focusing on oceanographic technology. His research includes developing sensors for environmental and public health applications, contributing significantly to projects that integrate optical components and systems for analysis. Mowlem held several positions at the Southampton Oceanography Centre from research to principal research fellow, ultimately leading the Ocean Technology Engineering Group at the National Oceanography Centre until 2020. He has founded ClearWater Sensors Ltd., which specializes in chemical sensors using lab-on-chip technology. His contributions to the field are extensive, having supervised numerous PhD and Master's students, published over 125 articles, and directed projects with significant funding.
