Biography

Matt Pharr is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, where he holds the J. Mike Walker ‘66 Faculty Fellow position. He is also an affiliated faculty member in the Materials Science and Engineering program. Dr. Pharr completed his Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences at Harvard University in 2014, following a master's degree in the same field in 2010. He holds both a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Bachelor of Arts in Materials Science from Rice University, earned in 2008. His research interests focus on various aspects of mechanics, including chemo-mechanics and electro-chemo-mechanics, deformation and fracture of soft materials, and energy storage and conversion systems, particularly in lithium-ion batteries. Additionally, he explores biomechanical systems related to bioenergy production and the mechanics of irradiated materials for medical devices. He has received several accolades for his teaching and research, including the NSF CAREER Award and the Minerals, Metals, Materials Society Light Metals Division Young Leaders Professional Development Award.
