Biography

Matt Ratto is a full Professor and Associate Dean of Research at the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto. He is a faculty affiliate at the Climate Positive Energy Institute and the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society, as well as an SDG Fellow at the Sustainable Development Goals Institute. He was awarded the Ontario Minister of Colleges and Universities’ Award of Excellence in 2020, and has received Canada Grand Challenge grants for his work on 3D printed prosthetics. Ratto holds the Bell Canada Usability Labs Chair in Human-Computer Interaction from 2018 to 2023 and was the inaugural Director of the Bachelor’s degree program in Information. His research explores the social production of knowledge in the context of emerging digital technologies, utilizing critical theories and perspectives from the humanities and social sciences to develop novel insights and design paradigms. He is known for his conceptual work on 'critical making' and the application of creation in novel socio-technical systems.
