Biography

Matthew Archer is an interdisciplinary environmental social scientist whose research interests lie at the intersection of technology and sustainability, particularly in the context of global supply chain governance. He investigates metal and mineral supply chains with a focus on traceability and digitization, aiming to build frameworks for studying sustainability standards in technology governance for global agricultural supply chains. His work also explores the integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria into investment practices and examines how corporate sustainability managers understand the impact of these practices. Archer's forthcoming book, "Unsustainable: Measurement, Reporting, Limits of Corporate Sustainability," will be published by NYU Press in February 2024. His research has been published in various journals, including Surveillance Society, Critique Anthropology, Political Geography, Internet Policy Review, and Environment and Planning E: Nature and Space. Before joining Maastricht University, he taught at the University of York in the UK and Copenhagen Business School. Archer holds a PhD in environmental studies from Yale University, an MSc in environmental economics from the London School of Economics, and BAs in international studies and Chinese from the University of Mississippi. He is also the co-editor-in-chief of the journal Culture, Agriculture, Food, and Environment, which is part of the American Anthropological Association's Culture Agriculture section.
