Biography

Matthew Brander is a distinguished academic at the University of Edinburgh Business School, specializing in Carbon Accounting. His extensive background since 2006 encompasses greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting, climate change policy appraisal, consultancy, and academia. He has actively participated in the development of numerous international GHG accounting standards, including the revision of ISO 14064 parts 1 and 2, and has served as a chapter lead author for the GHG Protocol's Policy Actions Standard. Presently, he is a member of the Technical Working Group responsible for revising the GHG Protocol's guidance on scope 2 emissions and the Expert Working Group of the Science Based Targets Initiative. Matthew holds a PhD in Carbon Accounting from the University of Edinburgh, alongside an MSc in Environmental Sustainability, an MSc in Research Philosophy, and an MA in Mental Philosophy. His research interests are primarily focused on greenhouse gas accounting, exploring the methods and standards in this field, particularly the distinction between attributional and consequential methods and their implications for carbon accounting.
