Biography

Matthew Bui is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan School of Information, where he directs the Race Data (RAD) Justice Lab and co-organizes the Urban Tech Collective as part of the Digital Studies Institute. He is a faculty affiliate of the Digital Studies Institute and contributes to the Asian/Pacific Islander American (A/PIA) Studies Program. Bui's book, 'Appetite Data', is contracted with the University of California Press and examines how foodie platforms reflect mundane interactions within platform capitalism, shedding light on the exacerbation of racial and class inequalities in local communities. His work addresses digital resistance, highlighting how grassroots organizations can challenge and reshape digital platforms to align with values of care and solidarity. Bui's research has received substantial support from various foundations and has been recognized at international conferences. He previously served as a Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellow at New York University and earned his PhD from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California, along with several degrees in media communication. He is particularly interested in critical data studies, data justice activism, and the intersection of race and technology.
