Biography

Matthew Alexander Halkes Carey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Copenhagen. His primary research focuses on the Tachelhit-Berber speaking communities in Southern Morocco, particularly in the Central High Atlas mountains. His early work examined political organization and the concept of anarchy. He posits that real-world anarchist thought is a deliberate political strategy shaped by individuals' personal dispositions, emphasizing a pragmatic rather than ideological view of anarchy. Carey's postdoctoral research delved into subjectivity and emotions in the Moroccan High Atlas, tackling issues such as pre-marital sexuality, mental illness, domestic violence, and infant mortality within the context of religious change. Additionally, Carey is exploring themes of lying and mistrust in his forthcoming book and has worked to translate key works in anthropology, bridging diverse national traditions. He is the coordinator of the Religion and Subjectivity research group and a member of the Conflict, Power, and Politics group. His editorial roles include serving on the boards of the journals HAU and Terrain.
