Biography

Matthew Clarke is an Associate Professor at the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary, where he also serves as the Associate Head of Graduate Studies. His research interests encompass gas hydrates, particularly focusing on experimental measurements of gas hydrate formation and dissociation kinetics, as well as thermodynamic modeling of hydrate phase behavior. Clarke has actively engaged in both experimental and computational research related to gas hydrate kinetics and thermodynamics for over 20 years. His work covers the measurement of thermodynamic equilibrium conditions and the development of novel thermodynamic models. Additionally, he researches thermal energy storage materials, akin to electrical batteries, with a concentration on Phase Change Materials that store and release heat through melting and freezing. Clarke is interested in identifying bio-wastes and food waste as potential materials for phase change applications and investigates the synthesis and encapsulation of these materials. He has received several awards for his contributions to teaching and service within the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary.
