Matt started his career with a PhD in medical entomology in 1985 from the University of Glasgow, followed by postdoctoral research in immunology and epidemiology of allergic diseases. He moved to Australia in 1994 to pursue a research career at CSIRO focused on soil biodiversity and ecosystem function. In 2007, he began research on the ecology and management of floodplains and wetlands, with an emphasis on water resources in the Murray-Darling Basin. By 2012, Matt shifted his focus to adaptation research, aiming to change the ways people think and act regarding climate change, particularly in relation to adaptation pathways and the intersection of services, values, rules, and knowledge in adaptation decision-making. He is also an accredited Executive Coach. Matt is a founder member of the Transformative Adaptation Research Alliance (TARA) and has expertise in environmental science, management policy related to climate change adaptation, ecosystem ecology, and conservation science. Additionally, he has been involved with the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, working towards integrated science that supports conservation, natural resource management, and water policy adaptation.
