Biography

Dr. Matthew Coyle completed his graduate medical degrees at the University of Ottawa and remained in Ottawa to complete his residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the Ottawa Hospital. He fulfilled a lifelong dream of living in the Rocky Mountains by completing a complex spine fellowship at the University of Calgary, working alongside both orthopaedic and neurosurgeons. His training included the treatment of degenerative spinal conditions with a focus on minimally invasive spine procedures and complex oncologic trauma procedures. Dr. Coyle takes great pride in ensuring that his patients gain a clear understanding of their conditions to help alleviate symptoms. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Ottawa, where his research focuses on understanding biomechanical factors to improve outcomes in spine surgery and prevent adjacent level disease. Dr. Coyle is an active member of the Orthopaedic Residency training program, currently serving on the Competence Committee. Furthermore, he is a member of the Canadian Spine Society, Canadian Orthopaedic Association, and AO Spine North America. His areas of expertise encompass adult complex spine surgery and degenerative spine conditions, while his research interests include adult spine biomechanics and clinical pathways.
