Biography

Matthew Demers received his PhD from the University of Guelph in 2012. He has served as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Guelph, focusing on developing and delivering courses in mathematics for engineering students. Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Guelph. His research primarily revolves around fractal-based methods in imaging, particularly driven by iterated function systems (IFS) and the collage theorem. He is involved in improving student preparedness in mathematics and enhancing course delivery. Demers has supervised numerous undergraduate projects on a variety of topics including dynamical systems, traffic flow problems, and applications of genetic algorithms. Significant research contributions include developing an epidemiological model for COVID-19 that considers multiple waves in Ontario, using a custom genetic algorithm to optimize parameters in the model to better reflect the real-world situation. His commitment to teaching and research has earned him accolades such as the Distinguished Professor Award for Innovation in Teaching from the University of Guelph Faculty Association and recognition as Professor of the Year by the Engineering Society from 2012 to 2020.
