Biography

Matthew Dyson specializes in criminal law and tort law, with a focus on the historical and comparative aspects of these fields. He has been a faculty member of Corpus Christi College since 2016 and became a Professor of Civil and Criminal Law in 2021. Prior to joining Oxford, he held positions at Trinity College, Cambridge as a Fellow and Director of Studies from 2011 to 2016 and at Jesus College, Cambridge from 2008 to 2011. He is an associate member of 6KBW College Hill Chambers, concentrating on areas related to criminal law and public civil law. Additionally, he serves as the President of the European Society for Comparative Legal History. Matthew has held visiting positions at esteemed institutions such as the University of Cape Town, University of Iowa, University of São Paulo, and Max Planck Institute for Comparative Private Law in Hamburg. His research is deeply engaged with the interaction between criminal law and tort law across various legal systems since 1850 and he welcomes research proposals in these themes.
