Biography

Matthew S. Erie is an Associate Professor of Modern Chinese Studies and a member of the Law Faculty at the University of Oxford. His interdisciplinary research combines law and anthropology to enhance theoretical frameworks and empirical borders in comparative law, with a specific emphasis on Asian law. His work particularly explores various aspects of Chinese law, including property law, constitutional law, and the policies affecting ethnic and religious minorities. He also investigates Islamic law, focusing on familial, commercial, and ritual dimensions affecting Muslim communities, as well as international law encompassing dispute resolution, conflict laws, anti-corruption measures, and investment law. His scholarship has been featured in leading journals, including the Harvard International Law Journal and the Yale Journal of International Law. His book, 'China and Islam: The Prophet, the Party, and Law,' published by Cambridge University Press, provides an ethnographic analysis of the interaction between sharia and state law in China. Currently, he is working on a research project funded by the European Research Council, titled 'China, Law, and Development,' which examines China's strategies for establishing cross-border order in international economic law.
