Biography

Matthew Evans is a Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and holds the Mathworks Professorship. He completed his B.S. in Physics from Harvey Mudd College in 1996 and went on to earn his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 2002. Following his graduation, he engaged in post-doctoral research at Caltech, primarily focusing on the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). In 2007, he joined MIT as a research scientist where he contributed significantly to the design and construction of the Advanced LIGO interferometer. Since January 2013, he has led a research group at MIT aimed at developing new technologies to enhance the sensitivity of Advanced LIGO. Matthew was elected chairperson of the Advanced Interferometer Configurations Working Group in 2014, where he provides coherent design targets for future gravitational wave detectors and directs instrument R&D for the LIGO Scientific Collaboration. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2018 and became a Full Professor in 2022.
