Biography

Professor Matthew Evans works at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he holds the MathWorks Professorship in Physics. His research focuses on advancing the design and capabilities of gravitational wave detectors. He has been actively involved in the development of technology for the next generation of observatories. After earning a B.S. in Physics from Harvey Mudd College in 1996, he completed his Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology in 2002. Following this, he worked with LIGO and Virgo, contributing to the LIGO project as a research scientist from 2007 before joining MIT in 2013 to lead research efforts aimed at improving the sensitivity of gravitational wave detectors. His notable projects include the development of low thermal noise coatings and enhancements to quantum-optical control methods for interferometers. Currently, Evans leads the Cosmic Explorer project, which aims to detect gravitational waves from the early universe.
