Biography

Matthew Evenden is a Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia. He earned his PhD from York University in 2000 and has a Master's degree from the same institution, alongside an Honours Bachelor's degree from Queen's University. His research interests are prominently situated at the intersection of environmental history and water history, with a specific focus on the history and politics surrounding large rivers, dam controversies, and issues of water supply and quality. Some of his key publications include 'Fish versus Power: Environmental History of the Fraser River' (Cambridge, 2004) and 'River Returns: Environmental History of the Bow' (MQUP, 2009). He co-authored 'Allied Power: Mobilizing Hydro-Electricity in Canada’s World War' with Christopher Armstrong and H.V. Nelles (Toronto, 2015). Currently, he is developing a new project that explores the ecological, economic, and social consequences of solid ballast use in the Age of Sail, linking his research on rivers and water with ocean environments and the history of globalization.
