Biography

Matthew Francis graduated from Adelaide University with an Honours degree in Bachelor of Science, majoring in Microbiology, Genetics, and Biochemistry in 1990. He completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in bacterial pathogenesis in 1997. He undertook postdoctoral research training at Umeå University from 1997 to 2001. In 2002, he established his independent research team at Umeå University with support from the Swedish Research Council as a junior investigator. In 2007, he gained tenure as an associate professor in prokaryotic molecular genetics and was promoted to professor in 2016. Matthew has been involved in undergraduate teaching in areas related to bacterial infection biology, genetics, and gene expression, and currently serves as the Director of Undergraduate Education in the Department of Molecular Biology at Umeå University. His research team, the Matthew Francis Lab, focuses on understanding the mechanisms by which bacteria preserve biological functions when exposed to toxic environments.
